Drum & bass pioneer and Hospital Record’s crown jewel Danny Byrd is back! He’s set 2018 ablaze with monolith anthems ‘Devil’s Drop’, ‘Salute’ ft MC GQ and ‘Hold Up The Crown’ ft Ky Lenz, now he proudly presents his first album in five years, ‘Atomic Funk’.
A 15-track funk-fuelled compendium of rolling dancefloor-fillers that tributes to the jungle foundation moulding his early discography. Collaborations with the likes of I-Kay, Maduk, Ownglow, Times x Two and MC GQ, fuse with powerful doses of Danny’s hip-hop and R&B infused 174BPM productions. ‘Atomic Funk’ is undoubtedly Mr Byrd’s finest work to date and includes one of the biggest future D+B anthems ‘Holy Star’ that’s brought to life with vocal delights from MC Foxy.
‘Just A Step Away’ (ft. Ownglow) has become a silver bullet for the Byrd, taking a spotlight in his DJ sets as his finishing move. With its gorgeous vocals, volatile rave synths and humming sub-bass, it’s not hard to see why. However, that’s far from the only weapon in this legend’s locker. ‘Roll The Drums’ is a certified sub shaker bringing a fierce bassline and thundering percussion, plus there’s raw jungle madness with ‘In The Meantime’ (ft. Hannah Symons).
With fifteen incredible tracks from Hospital Records’ longest standing signing, ‘Atomic Funk’ is Danny Byrd at his best. Crafted for the dancefloor and feel-good from start to finish, a must-have for any true Hospital fan.
Jamal Phillips (born April 26, 1979), who performs under the mononym Jamal, is an American rapper and music producer. He started his career as one-half of rap duo Illegal, the rap act formed by Dallas Austin in the early 1990s.
Phillips’ tenure with Illegal was short-lived; following the lukewarm response to 1993’s The Untold Truth — the group’s full-length debut — Phillips embarked on a solo career. He teamed up with Erick Sermon of the Def Squad to release 1995’s Last Chance, No Breaks, his debut release.
The album (produced by Easy Mo Bee, Redman, Rockwilder and Sermon) peaked at #10 and #37 on Billboard magazine’s Heatseekers and Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums charts respectively. The album also spawned a pair of hit singles — “Fades Em All”, which sampled The Notorious B.I.G.’s ‘Ready To Die’ and “Keep It Real”, which sampled Stevie Wonder’s ‘Ribbon In The Sky’.
In 2006, Jamal signed a deal with rapper Yukmouth to be a part of his Smoke-A-Lot Records label. An as yet to be titled album is due out in the near future.
In 1995 he performed on Conspiracy, the LP from Junior M.A.F.I.A. He has since gone on to collaborate with other renowned rappers; in 1996, he was featured on The Coming the LP from Busta Rhymes and Keith Murray’s Enigma. The following year, he teamed up again with Busta Rhymes, performing on that rapper’s 1997 LP, When Disaster Strikes. In 1998, he collaborated with the Def Squad on El Niño, their debut release.
He also had production duties on B.Coming, the 2005 release from Beanie Sigel.
Jamal appears on Illegal bandmate Malik’s recent (2005) CD “Malik M.D. aka Hershey Locc Hefner: The Game Needs Me”.
He has also appeared on songs with Shyheim, Heltah Skeltah, Coolio, MC Breed, Method Man, Busta Rhymes, Young Zee, Bone Thugs N Harmony, Treach, The D.O.C. and others.
Deeply melodic and danceable, Are You Still Certain? is an emotional appeal for truth and understanding.
Featuring Hamed Sinno from Mashrou’ Leila, the video pitches the cold hand of the law, the spectre of violence and innocence lost, as a timeless ever-present human struggle. Sinno performs against a series of vignettes that illustrate the ego’s blind pursuit of ‘truth’. It was been directed by Joie Iacono and Andy Butler under their Hoarder alias (in collaboration with Robert Fox).
Taken from the latest Hercules & Love Affair album, ‘Are You Still Certain?’ is at once a balm to cultural tensions and a challenge to misconception and prejudice, written by Butler and Mashrou’ Leila with additional vocals by Rouge Mary.
Mashrou’ Leila are rapidly emerging band from Lebanon now receiving international recognition. The loose collective of students who began jamming together in 2008 at the American University of Beirut has gradually focused into an ambitious, fiercely articulate quartet: vocalist/lyricist Hamed Sinno, guitarist/multi-instrumentalist Firas Abou Fakher, violinist Haig Papazian, and drummer Carl Gerges. And the music they make has focused, too, into a charged, atmospheric version of pop that is geographically impossible to place. The lyrics draw on their collective experiences, which the band shares with the youth of the Middle East, and addresses the need for self-expression and a judgment free culture— a notion often stifled in a conservative society. Through their relevant and charged lyrics, their music has resonated with fans all over the globe. CNN has described Mashrou’ Leila as “The voice of their generation” while the Financial Times have called them “The Arab world’s most influential independent band”.
Hercules & Love Affair feat. Mashrou’ Leila – Are You Still Certain? – the English lyrics
Hey you,
didn’t you used to know the truth?
how’d that play out for you?
tell me,
since you know the truth,
how’s that working out for you?
Chorus:
Hey you
tell me, are you still certain?
tell me
tell me, are you still certain?
tell me, are you still certain?
tell me, are you still certain?
tell me, are you still certain?
do you still know the truth
Verse 2:
Hey you,
no one knows truth,
how can you judge with such confidence?
tell me,
why have you given yourself licence
to speak with such conviction
Chorus:
Hey you
tell me, are you still certain?
tell me
tell me, are you still certain?
tell me, are you still certain?
tell me, are you still certain?
tell me, are you still certain?
do you still know the truth
